This moment is the only thing we have. All that I read and listened to this week (Primarily You Made It Weird), and pretty well every week for that matter, says as much. And there is nothing denying this truth. When we are in the moment there is nothing to worry about, for worry only comes when we think about what might happen in the future. But any worry can be extinguished when we clear the future from our mind and focus only on the task at hand. For when we take care of the present in an honest manner, the future will take care of itself.
In order to live in the moment we must avoid lies at all costs, for lying in itself takes us out of the moment. We lie because we’re thinking of potential future repercussions. And should those future repercussions come to fruition, we are then forced to think back to the version of our self that created the lie and speak inline with those falsehoods. How then can one live in the moment if they’re constantly jumping from the past to the future? It is impossible. Often times we may think that by lying we are making things easier for ourselves, but we are only kicking the can down the road for our future selves to deal with. This, of course, only results in more strain on our lives. Much more than the truth ever could.
And not only does lying prevent us from living in the moment, it steals the moment, and the truth, away from anybody exposed to our lies. It creates a false sense of self and relationships and community, preventing us all from having deeper and more meaningful relationships. We must be honest with ourselves, and honest with those around us, here and now. This is undoubtedly a difficult task for most, myself included, but as the saying goes, “And the truth, shall set you free.”
